Alice Austen House History

Alice Austen House’s history goes back to the early 19th century. The house was built by John H. Austen Jr., surrounded by farmland, with the main road separating the street side of the house from the river. Today, that road is Victory Boulevard.

Toward the end of 1881, Alice Austen began renting the cottage after she had completed her studies at the Normal College of the City of New York, a private school for training teachers that was founded by Catharine Beecher. Alice Austen had begun her photography experiments at this time, and shortly after moving into the house, she had a darkroom built in an out-building behind the main house.

In 1882, Alice Austen purchased the house and began enlarging it to meet her needs as a studio space for her photography business. She also created a darkroom, which was covered by glass roofing and remained intact until 1999, when it was destroyed in a storm caused by Hurricane Floyd.

The Alice Austen House also offers a range of special events including: guided tours, children’s art workshops and the annual Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences (SIIAS) fundraiser gala.
