Conference House Park

Conference House Park, located in Staten Island, NY, is a rather small park. This is misleading though, as the park contains Italian gardens recognized by the New York Botanical Gardens Preservation Society that are renowned for their beauty and well-maintained grounds.

The birth of conference house Park traces back to 1735 when Captain John Rapalje purchased land from an Indian tribe after a treaty was signed. In 1792, William Miller purchased the land from Rapalje. Miller then used the grounds to build his home and it became known as “Miller’s House.” The Miller family also built a guest house on their property for travelers who would stop by.

The Staten Island Historical Society owns Conference House Park while the city of New York owns Conference House Museum.

Conference House Park is famous for its two-story Conference House Museum and it is for this reason that most people visit the park. The museum contains numerous portraits, artifacts, and furniture from American history and can be seen at guided tours provided by conservators.

The park itself comprises a variety of plant life: azaleas, dogwood trees, lilacs, rose bushes, rhododendrons, camellias, and magnolias. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the Italian gardens which can be found within Conference House Park. For those interested in additional activities, there is a playground for children as well as open fields where visitors can play Frisbee or soccer.

People who want to learn more about the history and culture of Conference House Park are encouraged to attend the park’s annual ‘House Party’ that is held in September. This event celebrates Italian culture and displays historical artifacts that visitors can see up close.

Conference House Park Facilities

Facilities in Conference House Park include a Visitors Information Center, visitor parking lots, a playground area, and two tennis courts. The park does not contain any open restrooms or drinking fountains.

A concession stand is on-site during the summer months from May to October. It can be found in Conference House Park’s main parking lot which is located off of New Dorp Lane. Concession stands at Conference House Park offer a wide selection of snacks and beverages.

It also has picnic areas that visitors can use for a small fee. These picnic areas are not permitted to be used between 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm daily as they are reserved for members of Conference House Park’s community partner organizations during this time.
