Manhattan Project scientists assembled at Fort Wadsworth – Gateway National Recreation Area in August 1939 when they arrived in New York City to work on the atom bomb. The original location was chosen due to its isolated location with enough land for expansion and its proximity to the shoreline and large metropolitan area.

The Manhattan Project scientists came from all over, many of them have never met before. Many other scientists also chose to work on the project at Fort Wadsworth – Gateway National Recreation Area including Enrico Fermi, Edward Teller, John von Neumann, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Isidor I. Rabi.

Fort Wadsworth – Gateway National Recreation Area is home to over 500 campsites, a heated pool complex. It also boasts special facilities for group camping, trailer sanitation stations, and fishing areas along the shoreline of Staten Island.

Thousands of New Yorkers visit Fort Wadsworth – Gateway National Recreation Area each year to enjoy its wide variety of facilities that include a miniature golf course, hiking trails, picnic areas, and both athletic fields and courts.

In the spirit of conservation, the park encourages low-impact activities including hiking on designated trails instead of open parkland to reduce erosion.

It is recommended that visitors acquire camping permits prior to arrival. Campers are also allowed to stay in approved RVs, pop-up campers, and trailers.
