Staten Island Ferry

Staten Island Ferry, located in Staten Island, NY, is a ferry system that has been used for over a century.

The ferry system has faced issues over the past several decades including overcrowding, security concerns, lack of transportation for special needs riders, environmental damage due to sewage discharge into New York Harbor, and pollution-related to world trade centers.

Staten Island Ferry has three terminals, Whitehall Mall Terminal in Manhattan, St. George Terminal in Staten Island and Tompkinsville Station that connects with the North Shore Branch of the SIR train line.

The ferry system has been a major part of transportation for over a century mainly because it is cheap and free from traffic congestion.

In recent years, there have been several changes in the Staten Island Ferry system. For example, in 2009, it was announced that all customers boarding in Manhattan will be required to use new high-tech MetroCards for their fares. The change has brought up some problems related to local bus systems also using this technology. Another major concern is that the costs of upgrades are not worth the benefits.

Staten Island Ferry History

A New York ferry service began in the early 19th century between Manhattan and Staten Island, operated by the Staten Island Ferry Company beginning in 1817.

That ferry service lasted until 1905 when it was taken over by the city. It was then that ferry service began to operate 24/7 and the United States Department of War took over control during both World Wars.

However, in 1953, New York City bought away Staten Island Ferry’s private investors and became its owner, operating it as a public entity for nearly 20 years before selling it to a private company in 1972. Today, the Staten Island Ferry is run by New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT).

Staten Island Ferry Route

The ferry route features two different routes that carry over 65,000 people each day. The shorter route leaves from Whitehall Station pier in Manhattan and leaves every 30 minutes. However, the second route departs every 15 minutes and carries passengers from Whitehall Station to St. George Ferry Terminal in Staten Island.
