Staten Island Zoo

Staten Island Zoo, located in Staten Island, NY, is an 8-acre zoo and home to more than 1400 permanent animal residents. It is located in West New Brighton, between the Narrows and the Watchung Mountains. The Zoo has been famous for its marine life collections, including rays and sharks as well as penguins, sea otters, and harbor seals (brought from Bayonne) but also for the great apes, the Snow Leopard, and other endangered species.

When it first opened in 1936, Staten Island Zoo was a much different place than what it is today. It has grown from an 8-acre park with just a few animals to one of New York City’s most popular attractions.

The zoo itself is Staten Island’s biggest attraction and a favorite destination for school groups and families. The Staten Island Zoo is a great place to spend a day, especially if you have children.

As the zoo has grown over the years, so have its animal residents. Once comprised of just a few animals including monkeys, lemurs, and birds, today’s collection includes three polar bears, three snow leopards, three Malayan tigers, and one of New York’s largest aquariums (Staten Island Zoo is also an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums).

The Staten Island Zoo includes a water-themed carousel, a life-size replica of a TWA Transatlantic Clipper airplane, a giant crawl-through Plexiglas bubble, a children’s play area, Splashdown Safari aquatic park with a water slide, and a variety of other unique attractions.

The Staten Island Zoo is home to more than 1,400 animals representing more than 250 species from around the world. During your visit, you can marvel at elephants, giraffes, and zebras in African Journey, come nose-to-nose with a snow leopard in the Himalayan Passage, see some of our smaller friends from all over the world at Neighborhood Farm, and much more within Nature Trails.

The African Journey exhibit houses animals that have inhabited the African continent for millions of years. It is home to the Zoo’s elephant herd, giraffe herd, Grevy’s zebra and ostrich residents while providing a new home for one of its most popular residents – the red river hog family.

The Staten Island Zoo hosts a variety of events throughout the year. These include Train Rides on the Wildlife Express, Zoo Boo, and Wild About Water Safari theme days.

Staten Island Zoo has a variety of educational experiences include the Zoo Mobile with its zoo outreach program, Adopt-A-Classroom, and Spring Break Camps.
